NorthGrid Solar has specialized in creating custom solutions for the rooftop solar market in Ontario. For example, NorthGrid's Elevated Truss System (ETS) has been installed across Ontario on a multitude of different styles of buildings. No other system in the country offers more benefits to the customer's roof. Rooftop solar involves special consideration for the roof membrane, building envelope, and the safety of those in and around the building.
NorthGrid Solar designs and installs the following types of rooftop solar mounting options:
Ground mount solar systems as their name suggests are installed directly on top of the land vs a building or other structure. While some of the challenges that buildings and rooftop's present are not at play, special engineering has to be done to assess the soil characteristics and topography of the land. NorthGrid Solar currently is working on several multi-megawatt ground mount systems that provide clean, reliable electricity to the power grid.
If you have a ground mount solar opportunity that needs developing, contact us today to discuss your project.
Ontario's FIT and microFIT programs are designed to integrate solar power onto Ontario's power grid by paying not for solar panels but rather for the power that they generate. This is a great opportunity for property and building owners to install a solar power system on their own property and sell all the power to the local utility. The FIT and microFIT programs are managed by the IESO (formerly OPA).
NorthGrid has successfully installed numerous FIT and microFIT systems since 2009. Contact Us today to have NorthGrid design, install and maintain your next solar project.
NorthGrid Solar is currently engaged in developing both large utility-grade solar PV projects as well as stand-alone, off-grid power systems. Leveraging our considerable experience of 70+ combined years in designing and constructing reliable photovoltaic power plants, NorthGrid is well positioned to participate in meeting the global demand for renewable energy. This technology will provide much needed power to areas of the world that desperately require dependable electricity.
A bit of History: Interestingly, NorthGrid personnel have been engaged in providing solar power systems to several countries throughout Africa starting in 1984 with a communications project at Manantali in Mali. Fourteen villages in Edo State, Nigeria received solar water pumping systems; several hundred solar communications systems were deployed across the Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park, Kericho and Lake Naivasha regions of Kenya; solar radio repeaters for the TRC railway in Tanzania from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, also for the SNCZ railway in DRC from Lubumbashi to Ilebo, also for a bauxite rail line from Boke to the coast in Guinea Conakry. Most recently in 2014 NorthGrid has supplied solar PV to operate a rural 160-bed hospital at Chitokoloki, Zambia with two operating theatres.
Solar deployments have also taken place in the Philippines, China, Laos, South Sumatra, and Pakistan.
Currently NorthGrid is developing multi-megawatt, grid-tied utility scale projects to support national power grids in Africa. These projects will be developed, constructed and operated by NorthGrid.

The challenge for rural villages is gaining access to reliable and affordable power in order to pump water, provide lighting and communications services. More and more, even remote communities rely upon timely information to ship perishable agricultural products to the market.
For more than 30 years NorthGrid personnel have been designing, supplying and installing village power systems. Each configuration depends upon the specific needs of the village.
Application | Description | Loads |
---|---|---|
Schools | both daytime & evening operation lighting, computers, copiers, etc. | # Students kW/hrs/day | Hospitals & Clinics | lighting, medical diagnostic equipment, vaccine refrigeration | Patients | Poice Stations | Radio, lights, security | kW/hrs/day | Government Offices | Lighting | # Persons | Communications | Internet, telephone | kW/hrs/day | Street Lighting | Security | Hours/night | Communal Water Supply | Boreholes | Litres/day | Residences | Home power | kW/hrs/day |
Typical rural villages would require a solar array, charge controller, storage battery, dc-ac inverter, and possible diesel backup generator. The size of system depends on the geographic location, load and usage pattern.
NorthGrid can offer future-compatible system designs that can be interconnected to the grid in the future if and when it reaches the village.
